Google Redwood City - The Grove Experience Center

The Grove experience center was made as a space to host guests and conferences. It was designed to showcase Google’s position at the cutting edge of technology, while celebrating the roots it has laid down in Redwood City. Aldy worked as a technical designer and fabricator to bring multiple large scale permanent installations in the facility to life. The first of these to greet the visitors are the giant hanging tree ring sculptures stationed in the main lobby, which are fashioned after 3D scans of native redwood. Other works in this space include a ribbed wooden hallway with lights that animate and respond to your position, a grove of 2 storey tall stylized trees with mechanized branches, redwood seed cone pendants, and several other installations.

Google NYC - St. John’s Terminal

This former terminus for New York Central Railroad’s High Line is now Google North America’s headquarters for global business organization. Google’s brand & philosophy is expressed in the space through the various permanent installations on site. Aldy worked on creating the visual and mechanical design of a series of hundreds of mechatronic wind chimes, from early concepting, prototyping, hardware & material sourcing, through to creating custom installation tools. He also worked on other installations in the space, including light-projected books that bridge physical and digital experiences, and a wishing well with digital content that responds to coins that are tossed in.

Google Mountain View - Gradient Canopy

The sister site to Google’s own global headquarters in Bay View Campus, Gradient canopy is an equally innovative and sustainable building that integrates the workplace with public community spaces. Collaborating closely with Google’s internal experience design team, Aldy worked on early experience, concept, and technical design, to express Google’s mission and its innovations through various permanent installations on site. Particular focus was placed in integrating aspects of local flora and fauna into these pieces, culminating in concepts that range from flocks of abstracted kinetic sculptures of local birds, to a touch-activated sculptural oak tree cross-section that uses its tree rings to chronologize Google’s history. Aldy also acted as a bridge between the design and engineering departments, constantly striving to deliver a product that excels in both its form and function.

Google NYC - Pier 57

Once a shipping and storage terminal, Pier 57 is now not only listed on the National Register of Historic Places, but also a Google workplace that boasts public community spaces. Within it, the Chelsea View Theater was created as a space to host live broadcasts, lectures and receptions. Aldy worked on the on-site installation of the double-sided LED honeycomb wall of the theater and its pre-function space. These walls act as low-resolution displays that enhance the content shown on the central, high-resolution display.

Carnegie Involvement Association - Buggy 23

Buggies have been raced in Carnegie Mellon University’s annual sweepstakes for over 100 years. They are unpowered vehicles that are raced downhill by drivers at speeds reaching 40 MPH. In its modern iteration, buggies frequently borrow learnings from aerospace, with heavy usage of carbon fibre and integration of computational fluid dynamics into the design process. Aldy led chassis & packaging design for Carnegie Involvement Association. He worked on surface modeling, packaging, and aerodynamics for buggy 23, which regularly records the highest top speed on the course. He also served as livery designer and painter during his time there.
